Nilüfer Yanya is a 21-year-old Londoner who makes smoky, soothing pop songs that are simple in their delights yet confounding in their clever construction. There are a few reference points for what she does—her sneaky guitar skills suggest Mary Timony and Helium, and her cool dance melodies recall the xx—but she’s pretty special all her own. “Sliding Doors,” a cut from her upcoming Plant Feed EP, is song that sneaks into you brain and keeps hitting the pleasure center.
Formed from a few simple parts—a calming guitar riff, handclaps, and quiet percussion—“Sliding Door” is a perfect canvas for Yanya’s potent voice. Her singing is rich and placid, soothing in its every little coo. But her choppy diction gives her delivery more urgency. She draws out each word, dwelling on their sounds to make each syllable feel more significant or emotional (“I hide/You seek/Whatever/You find/Keep/I can’t stay here”). As the track closes, a perfect little sax line floats like a wisp of smoke rising from a candle, and Yanya hums gracefully before the lights go out, leaving you in a peaceful state.
