“Drippin” [ft. Migos]
Last year, Teyana Taylor took a star turn in the video for Kanye West’s “Fade,” leaping around a gym in racy, skilled choreography—and shedding her former image as Pharrell’s tomboy teen protégé. Now, with her new single, “Drippin,” she nods to traditional R&B, offering a sultry melody of “Won’t you stop playing around?” that alternates between cooing and begging. In the equally suggestive video, she dons Day-Glo body paint and appears coated in syrup. Her “drip drop” references in the hook make the Empire song of same name seem silly by comparison, yet recalls the suggestive water motif of Migos’ “Slippery”—and here, that group’s Quavo and Offset ditch the hype-man ad-libs for energetic lyrics like, “We gon’ need a new mattress.”
On “Drippin,” Taylor has one central question: “When the last time we fucked to a record?” It oozes like something The Velvet Rope- era Janet Jackson would have asked—big shoes to fill, but “Drippin” suggests this singer is on a similar rise.
