- Idle Hands
The Chilean-born DJ and producer Shanti Celeste (aka Shanti Maass) first starting releasing tracks via Idle Hands, the eclectic Bristol dance music label central to the city’s current scene. When Idle Hands later launched a proper storefront, Maass was one of their first workers. While Bristol’s perhaps best known for Massive Attack and dubstep, Maass is more likely to namedrop Omar S and the sounds of Detroit, Chicago, and New York as influential to her own releases, which range from dreamy house numbers to more funky electro grooves.
“Thoughts,” the B-side from her latest EP, Make Time, doesn’t sound tied to any of these metropolitan locales: The atmospheric loop of an intro and the resonant synth melody recall ambient techno and electro, but Maass makes the track her own through the sharp synths that spiral in the background, as well as its overall ambling pace. While the song doesn’t climax or develop in any traditional manner, Maass still expertly crafts a groove from off-kilter soft kicks and pads and hissing cymbals. “Thoughts” is an aptly introspective and heady track that even further justifies Shanti Celeste’s rise out of the Bristol scene.
