“Viva Presidente Trump!”
The image of a murderous, Satanic Mexican drug gang shouting “Long Live President Trump!” in Spanish makes for delicious satire on the latest from grindcore outfit Brujeria. Long before Brujeria's true identities were revealed to the public, it was obvious that they weren't actually border-region drug dealers with a taste for decapitating people with machetes. The ruse made it thrilling to listen to their tasteless depictions of ritual human sacrifice. This time, though, bandleaders John Lepe and SoCal punk vet/pro-wrestling commentator Pat Hoed seize the moment and take their balaclava-wearing schtick to a new level.
The song begins with a voice paraphrasing from Trump's infamous comments on Mexico, turning the presidential candidate's virulent xenophobia on its head. Lepe, who fronts the band in-character as Juan Brujo, has explained the song as a nod of approval from one uninhibited sociopath to another. But it's not hard to read the scathing criticism that seethes between the lines. During the surprisingly catchy chorus, guitarist/backing vocalist Gaby Dominguez supplies high-pitched shrieks a la Napalm Death's Mitch Harris. When Lepe sings "He hates wetbacks," Dominguez responds with "deport them!"
Lepe, Hoed, and their supporting cast—which includes Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury on guitar—stuff “Viva Presidente Trump!” with mosh breakdowns, punk-inflected pogo riffs and, of course, blinding flashes of grind. “Mexico,” Trump has insisted, “is laughing at us.” Whether or not that's the case, Brujeria has given us all a reason to laugh (and cringe) along with their twisted grindcore anthem.
