Listen to the track below
“OO,” from Vancouver producer Phoebé Guillemot—aka RAMZi—exists in a world where tribal drums are as commonplace as bird calls, with dubby fragments of ideas flitting in and out. In headphones, “OO” is ear candy, replete with hypnotic moments sculpted and refined for maximum catharsis. The through line could be RAMZi’s dedication to polyrhythm, which manifests in the track's every musical decision, whether percussive or harmonic. “OO” comes across as a progressive take on a Balearic beat. It closes out an upcoming album called For Haku, which will be released alongside an installation from contemporary ceramic artist Jessica Hans. It’s a smart pairing; like RAMZi, Hans focuses on taking the natural environment and bending it at her will until it’s barely recognizable but nonetheless beautiful.
